Walsall Ladies Manager Jason Barrowclough is looking forward to leading his side out when they open their 2019/20 Season campaign on Sunday.
The Saddlers welcome Leek Town Ladies to Dales Lane this weekend and whilst the Ladies have endured a busy preseason schedule, Barrowclough is hoping they will get their just rewards on the day.
“I’m really looking forward to Sunday,” he said.
“The team are feeling good about the first game, it’s going to be a good test for the Ladies playing in a new league with new players in the squad but we have had a good two months of preseason training and four preseason friendlies so hopefully we can get off to a positive start and put some points on the board come Sunday.
“The Ladies are all raring to give a good account of themselves when they get on the pitch and I am looking forward to the game.
“The preseason schedule has been tough for the team, but they have shown a great attitude and a desire to improve as a team and as individuals.
“We have played some very good teams in preseason and have had tests along the way, but that’s what we wanted. We wanted to test ourselves and I feel that we did well in those games. We want to be at the same standard as those above us so it was a good insight for the team as to where we want to go as a club.”
Sunday’s opponents Leek Town Ladies have themselves had a positive preseason and Barrowclough is expecting a difficult game.
“Leek Town Ladies are a good side and the first game of the season is always a tough one for any football team. It will be a tough game but I am confident in the team I have to get a positive result.
“I would like to see the same determination and quality of football that I have seen in preseason on Sunday. The team know and understand what I ask of them on game days as well as training so I have no doubt they will go out and give 110% for myself the supporters and for the club.
Leading the Saddlers out on Sunday will be Samantha Roden, who earlier this week was announced as the Walsall Ladies captain and Barrowclough believes the right decision was made.
“Samantha is a great asset to our squad,” he said.
“She is a great defensive player who is very vocal during games but also a player that the team respect. I have no doubts that she will be a great captain for us this season and someone that will give her all to the cause.”
