Walsall Ladies pride themselves on a never-say-die attitude and have endured much success over the years.
In the 2019/20 Season, the Ladies stormed into an early charge for promotion contenders under the helm of manager Jason Barrowclough, as the Saddlers won five on the bounce after an opening day defeat to Leek Town Ladies. Momentum began to build for the Ladies as the season progressed and the signs for a challenge for promotion was evident.
Midway through the season there were a wholesale of changes as manager Jason Barrowclough resigned from his position as first team manager, with a number of first team players also leaving the club.
Donna Ash, an FA Level 2 Qualified Coach who had previously been in charge of the Development Squad, agreed to make the step up and take charge of first team affairs in an attempt to continue the good form in the league. Ash’s first game in charge saw the Saddlers win 7-4 against Shrewsbury Juniors and the Ladies continued to rise up the league table from then as they won another three games in the next four matches.
After another win on the road in March, a 1-5 win against Stafford Ladies, the 19/20 Season was put on hold in light of the recent Coronavirus pandemic. After weeks away from the football pitch and much uncertainty as to what happens next, the campaign was declared void.
After a lengthy spell on the sidelines, some form of normality began to resume and the Saddlers received some positive news as their application to join the West Midlands Regional Women’s League Division One North for the 20/21 Season was accepted by the Staffordshire FA and therefore promotion was achieved.
The Saddlers began their new season in their new division with five defeats on the bounce and whilst the start was disappointing for the team, recent results have shown promise.
The Ladies secured their first point of the season in November with a 4-4 draw on the road against Coventry City. Shortly after this Donna Ash recruited Jo Sheerin, a UEFA B coach, as joint-first team manager and in their first game together they helped the Ladies secure their first win of the 20/21 Season, a 3-2 win against Port Vale at Dales Lane in December.
The Ladies currently sit 8th in the West Midlands Regional Women’s League Division One North with four points.
