Walsall Ladies played host to Wyrley Women’s Reserves on Sunday 25th August in the second game of the 2019/20 Season.
Following the disappointing 1-5 loss to Leek Town Ladies in the opening game, the Saddlers were looking to kickstart their season with a positive result at Dales Lane and get some points on the board.
Barrowclough’s side started the game in a 3-5-2 formation in the hope of controlling proceedings and blocking any spells of play through the middle from the visitors and they did exactly that. Inside the opening 10 minutes, Walsall Ladies took the lead through Karys Craddock with a well taken strike drilling past the opposition goalkeeper. Shortly after and the Saddlers doubled their lead with striker Kelly Fowell getting on the scoresheet.
With the Saddlers two to the good, the early signs were positive and this continued through the team’s excellent link up play and work ethic both on and off the ball which put pressure on the opposition. Midway through the first half the Saddlers were rewarded a penalty and up stepped Craddock who calmly dispatched to make it 3-0, her second goal of the game.
The Saddlers’ dominant first half display was finished off with another goal, this time coming from defender Michelle Thompson. Following a scramble in the box from a corner, the ball fell straight to the feet of the defender who unleashed a strike through the wall of players and into the net to make it 4-0 to the hosts.
The second half arrived with a change in formation for the Ladies, switching to a 3-4-3 to push an extra player forward to the attacking line. This proved to work well for the team in the second half as the Ladies continued to show their ruthlessness in front of goal and put an additional seven goals into the back of the net with goals coming from Vicky Welton and Molly McKinley, whilst Craddock added another goal and Fowell added a further three goals to their names to complete their hat-tricks. Bethany James also secured herself a hat-trick with three very well taken goals to finish off a fantastic second half performance.
That was the last of the action as Walsall Ladies secured an emphatic 13-0 victory at Dales Lane to gain their first points of the 2019/20 Season.
